Paint that is typically applied to a boat below the waterline to guard the boat against hard growth of barnacles, mussels, and other crustaceans is called Bottom Paint. Some of these paints also help control soft growth as well. Soft growth is the formation of slime, sea grass, and algae. Boat bottom paint may be called by other names such as antifouling paint, antifoul paint, and antifoulants. They all contain biocides (pesticides) that are used to protect the surface against hard growth. Boat bottom paints should only be used on a boat and should not be used in a swimming pool, aquarium or any other surface that will be in direct contact with animal or human life.
